In short
Rinca is hot and exposed year-round. There is no shade on the medium and long loops, and the savanna radiates heat back at you well after the sun is up.
- Walk early. By late morning the trail is a heat exercise rather than a wildlife one.
- Carry more water than the walk seems to justify; there is no refill point on the island.
- Wet-season rain rarely stops the trek — it stops the boat.
At Sea
What the Crossing Depends On
The strait between Flores and the park runs strong tidal currents. Comfort and cancellation both come down to sea state rather than rainfall.
Currents
Tidal flow through the park is fast and well known. It shapes snorkelling stops more than it shapes the Rinca crossing.
Vessel matters
A speedboat crosses in 30–45 minutes and feels every wave. A wooden day boat takes 1.5–2 hours and rides them better.
Build in slack
Travelling December to March, keep a spare day. One postponed crossing should not cost you the island.
