Safe Because It Is Controlled
Rinca is safe in the way a working wildlife reserve is safe: because nobody walks alone. Every group of one to five people goes out with a licensed ranger, and that is not optional.

Incidents are rare, and the ones that happen almost always follow someone ignoring an instruction. The system works when you let it.
- Independent trekking is prohibited under park rules, everywhere on the island.
- Your ranger sets the viewing distance, judged on that animal on that day.
- There is no medical facility on Rinca; the nearest hospital is in Labuan Bajo, 30–45 minutes away by speedboat.

How a Trek Is Run
The same sequence every time, for every group, regardless of how experienced anyone thinks they are.
Stay grouped
Walk behind the ranger, keep the group together, and do not separate to get a better angle.
Keep distance
Rangers carry a forked stick to redirect an animal that approaches. Distance is their call, not yours.
If one comes close
Stand still, stay behind the ranger, do not run. Sudden movement is what turns curiosity into a chase.
Risks Worth Knowing

Heat, not dragons
Dehydration and sun exposure are the most common problems on the trail by a wide margin.

Snakes
Several species are present, including the Javan spitting cobra. Closed shoes and staying on the trail is the whole mitigation.

The crossing
Rough seas are the real reason days go wrong. A cancelled boat is the system working, not failing.
