Where the Dragons Actually Are
Rinca holds the densest reliable population in the park, and every sighting happens on one ranger-led loop out of Loh Buaya. Here is where they rest, when they move, and how close you will really get.

In short
Every visit begins at the Loh Buaya ranger station — the island’s only tourist entry point. Rangers lead small groups along fixed loops; independent trekking is not permitted anywhere on Rinca.
- The ranger station and kitchen area is the single most reliable spot for an early sighting.
- Dragons rest in shade through the middle of the day and move at the edges of it.
- Route choice changes the walk, not the odds — sightings cluster near the post.
Timing
When They Move
Dragons are ectotherms, so activity follows the temperature curve rather than the clock. On Rinca’s exposed terrain the pattern is pronounced.
Midday
Movement drops as temperatures peak. Dragons settle into shade, often close to the ranger post — still visible, rarely active.
Late afternoon
A second, softer window as the ground cools. Few scheduled trips reach Rinca this late; it is a liveaboard advantage.
Season
Dry months bring open sightlines across the savanna. After the rains the island is greener and the walking is cooler.
How Close You Actually Get
Dragons are wild apex predators capable of short, fast bursts. Every trek is guided precisely because of that, and the ranger — not the visitor — sets the distance, judged on how that individual animal is behaving that day.
Rangers carry a forked stick to redirect an animal that comes too close. Stay behind them, and never step toward a resting or feeding dragon for a photograph: stillness in the shade is not the same thing as calm.

Families and slower walkers
The short loops at Loh Buaya are graded easy and sit near the station, where sightings are most reliable. Ask your operator to confirm the shorter route when booking.

Flash off, no baiting, no stepping off the trail for an angle. A mid-range zoom does more than proximity ever will.
