Leave first
The early departure is cooler for children and busier for the animals. It is the single biggest lever you have.
Mind the crossing
A speedboat is quick and bumpy; a wooden boat is slow and steadier. With small children, steady usually wins.
Brief them
Stay behind the ranger, no running, no separating from the group. Rangers are firm about this and children respond to it.
Private or Open Trip
With children, a private boat buys the two things that matter: a departure time you choose, and a ranger group that moves at your pace rather than a stranger’s.
On an open trip the schedule belongs to the operator. That is fine for older children and harder with a five-year-old who wants to stop.

The nearest hospital is Labuan Bajo, 30–45 minutes away by speedboat. Bring what you might need.
