Boats at anchor under a dusk sky in Komodo National Park

Day & Short Trips

There Is No Sunset Trek

Rinca closes to trekking well before golden hour. What exists is a sunrise trek and a sunset spent on the water — and knowing the difference saves you a wasted booking.

Plan Golden Hour

In short

Ranger-led trekking runs to station hours, which end long before the light turns. Any listing implying a sunset walk among the dragons is selling something that does not happen.

  • Sunrise trekking is real, and it is the best version of the island.
  • Sunset happens on the boat — Kalong Island for the flying foxes is the classic stop.
  • Only a liveaboard or private charter can be in the right place at both ends of the day.

What Is Possible

Both Ends of the Day

Two different trips, often sold under one name. Book the one you actually want.

Sunrise trek

First arrival at Loh Buaya, cool ground, animals moving. Requires an overnight on the boat or a very early charter.

Sunset at anchor

Golden hour from the deck rather than the trail. Kalong Island’s flying foxes are the reason most boats stop there.

Liveaboard

The only format that reliably gives you both, because you are already in the park when the light arrives.

What to check

If a listing promises a sunset dragon trek, ask which ranger station stays open. None do.
