Adventure travel here means ranger-guided Komodo dragon trekking out of the Loh Buaya station, across dry savanna and patches of monsoon forest. Three routes leave the station, short, medium and long, and rangers rather than boat operators decide which of them are open on any given day. Treks regularly turn up Timor deer, wild water buffalo and long-tailed macaques, and the best birdwatching is along the mangrove fringe near the jetty at dawn. A shorter, slower nature walk suits families, seniors and first-time hikers who want the savanna views without the full ranger route. Savanna temperatures regularly pass 35 degrees Celsius by late morning, there is almost no shade on the open sections, and closed footwear matters more than any dragon-specific precaution. Every trek is ranger-guided; there is no unsupervised or self-drive safari option on the island, and no route on Rinca can be walked alone.
